The nakhchir in the traditional culture of Vakhiyo

VV Vakhiyo Valley · 29 August 2026 · 97

The nakhchir (mountain goat) held a special place in the traditional culture of Vakhiyo. Its horns were used as a protective symbol: they were placed on the doors of houses, set up on graves and at mazors (shrines), and images of the nakhchir were painted on the walls of houses.

In folk belief the nakhchir was considered a sacred animal able to protect a person and their home from evil spirits. Only a few decades ago nakhchir horns could be seen in many cemeteries of Vakhiyo.

Today this tradition has almost disappeared. Changing religious views, including the spread of stricter interpretations of Islam, have led part of the population to see such ancient customs as contrary to religion.

Preserving information about such traditions is important for studying and safeguarding the cultural heritage of Vakhiyo.
