Traditional houses of the Vakhiyo valley
Until the 1970s traditional houses in the Vakhiyo valley were similar to Badakhshan houses in their structure and interior layout. A characteristic feature of these dwellings was the chorkhona — a traditional interior space formed around four main sides.
This type of house suited the mountain climate and the traditional way of life of the people of Vakhiyo. From the 1970s onwards traditional dwellings were gradually replaced by modern houses, and many elements of the old architecture were lost.
