LEGAL DOCUMENTS

Terms of use

On what terms the project’s materials may be read, downloaded and republished.

Draft of 25 August 2026. The text is awaiting review by a lawyer.

What this document is about

This sets out the terms on which you may use the site vakhiyo.com and the materials published on it. By opening the site you agree to these terms.

What you may do without asking

  • Read, view and listen to everything published in the open part.
  • Download materials for personal use, study and research.
  • Quote with the source credited — “Vakhiyo” and a link to the material’s page.
  • Link to any page of the site.

What has to be agreed

  • Commercial use: sale, inclusion in paid editions and products.
  • Bulk republishing — more than a few materials in a row.
  • Automated harvesting of the site’s content and downloading the database as a whole.
  • Altering a material where the change alters its meaning.

Write to the editors to agree — the details are on the Contacts page.

Rights in the materials

The materials have different rights holders. For some archive documents and photographs the rights belong to families, museums and the photographers; such materials are marked in the “Rights” field on their page. For those the rights holder, not the editors, sets the terms.

Texts written by the editors may be used under the rules above with the source credited. The name and logo “Vakhiyo” may be used by agreement with the editors.

The closed Archive section

Access to the archive is granted by the editors with a password. The password is given personally and is not to be passed to third parties. Archive materials may not be placed in open access without the written consent of the editors and the rights holder.

If you donate material

  • By sending a file you confirm that you are entitled to dispose of it.
  • You permit the editors to keep the material, digitise it and publish it in the archive with the source credited.
  • You may ask for a publication to be taken down; we will do so within a reasonable time.

The editors check what is sent and may decline to publish without giving reasons — for example if the material does not relate to the valley or the rights to it are not confirmed.

What is not allowed

  • Sending materials whose rights belong to other people.
  • Trying to reach closed sections around the password.
  • Interfering with the site: flooding forms, guessing passwords, injecting malicious code.
  • Passing the site’s materials off as your own.

Liability

We try to keep the information on the site accurate but do not guarantee it: some of the material consists of oral traditions and old documents that disagree with each other. We show the disagreements rather than smooth them over. The site may be temporarily unavailable because of maintenance or hosting failures.

If you believe your rights have been infringed

Write to the editors: name the material, say what the infringement is and what confirms your rights. We will take the publication down while the matter is settled.

Changes

These terms may change. A new version appears on this page with the date of the update.
